NQ and MNQ follow the same Nasdaq-100 index, but the contract exposure is not the same. One NQ contract is ten times the size of one MNQ contract. That difference changes the dollar value of every tick, the risk created by the same chart stop, and the amount of room a trader has to manage the position.
The contract math
CME defines E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures, ticker NQ, as $20 multiplied by the Nasdaq-100 index. A one-point move is therefore $20 per contract. The minimum tick is 0.25 index points, so one tick is worth $5.
Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures, ticker MNQ, use a $2 multiplier. A one-point move is $2 per contract, and the same 0.25-point tick is worth $0.50. Ten MNQ contracts create approximately the same index-point exposure as one NQ contract before commissions, fees, and fill differences.
Why the same setup produces different account risk
A chart setup may be identical on NQ and MNQ, yet the financial impact can be radically different. A 20-point stop risks about $400 on one NQ contract but about $40 on one MNQ contract. A 50-point stop risks about $1,000 on NQ and about $100 on MNQ.
The stop should come from market invalidation first. Contract quantity should then be selected so the dollar loss at that invalidation fits the account. Reversing that order—choosing the desired number of contracts and then forcing a tiny stop—often causes traders to exit valid ideas because the position was too large.
A practical position-sizing formula
- Mark the entry and the technical invalidation level.
- Measure the stop distance in Nasdaq points.
- Multiply that distance by $20 for NQ or $2 for MNQ.
- Add a cushion for commissions, fees, and potential slippage.
- Divide the maximum planned trade risk by the per-contract risk.
- Round down. Never round up to force a trade.
Example: a trader allows $150 of risk and the valid stop is 30 points away. One MNQ contract risks about $60 before costs. Two MNQ contracts risk about $120 and may fit. One NQ contract risks about $600 and does not fit that risk budget.
When MNQ is usually the better tool
- The account cannot absorb a technically valid NQ stop.
- The trader wants to scale out in smaller pieces.
- The setup is being tested with real money at lower exposure.
- A prop-firm drawdown or daily loss limit requires tighter dollar control.
- The market is unusually volatile and normal stop distances have expanded.
When NQ can make sense
NQ can be efficient when the account, risk limit, and experience support the larger exposure. It may also require fewer contracts to express a larger risk budget. But the larger contract is not automatically more professional, and the micro is not automatically safer. A trader can still overleverage by stacking many MNQ contracts.
The Infinite standard
Start with higher-timeframe context, locate the liquidity, wait for confirmation, define invalidation, and only then calculate size. The contract is the delivery vehicle. It should never decide whether the setup is valid.
Find the setup first. Fit the contract to the risk second.
